The Church

Richard III appears to have been a pious and religious man. He regularly fulfilled his religious duties spending time every day in prayer and using part of his wealth for almsgiving (charity).

During his reign he founded 10 Chantries (paying priests to pray for their souls and the souls of their family members) and promoted a number of well-qualified scholars to bishoprics for example John Russell became the Bishop of Lincoln and Thomas Langton became Bishop of St. Davids.

As a patron of Queen's College, Cambridge, Richard III funded four clergymen to take up teaching posts and also contributed generously to the completion of the chapel of King's college including its intricate ceiling.
